Compass Colorado questions availability of drafts
DENVER (March 31, 2014) – Today, at a Colorado Independent Ethics Commission hearing concerning a complaint against Democratic Governor John Hickenlooper, complainants were surprised to learn the Governor’s counsel had been given an opportunity to review not one, but two drafts of the investigator’s report.

The revelation occurred as the Governor’s counsel sought to reserve the right to object to the completed report entering the record. Today’s hearing was a procedural event that marked another step forward in the ethics complaint filed by Compass Colorado against Hickenlooper.

“A critical aspect of any hearing process is allowing both sides equal access to material information,” said Kelly Maher, executive director of Compass Colorado. “The fact the Governor’s counsel has reviewed drafts of the investigator’s report not once, but twice, when we have yet to see it at all certainly elevates our curiosity about the drafts’ contents and raises concerns about the transparency of this process.”

The next meeting of the Independent Ethics Commission regarding this complaint will be held April 14, 2014.
